1611 saw the publication of two works which were of capital importance in their respective cultures: the version of the Bible prepared under the auspices of King James I of England which was to have such a profound influence on English literature, and the first dictionary of Spanish, the Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española, by Sebastián de Covarrubias, chaplain to King Philip II. 1611 was also the year in which the word traductor ('translator') was incorporated into the Spanish language. As historians of translation, our aim is to cast light on the relevant scenes of the Hispanic world. The aim of this journal is to assist in the task of retrieving and disseminating as much as possible of that extraordinary cultural memory.
